Leilana was born into a Sharlayan family known on the island for producing some of the few scholars who traveled abroad in the pursuit of knowledge. Her father is a professor of aetherology at the Studium, specializing in practical applications of aether. Her mother was once a gleaner, but had since retired from the profession in order to raise Leilana.From a young age, Leilana sought to expand her knowledge base. She would read her father's theses and mother's collection of books. She would pester the gleaners at the docks about what they had brought in. She would spend her free time in the Noumenon reading books and asking the adults all sorts of questions. She would enter the Studium at the young age of 14 and was known among the professors as the student who would always hang back after lecture to ask questions, bouncing between topics with the impulsivity of a cat.Between this accumulation of knowledge, Leilana was also absorbing and practicing one of her family's key tenets: knowledge should be used for the betterment of society.Her father, while not a particularly influential figure in Sharlayan politics, was one of the scholars who supported the Archon Louisoux's work in Eorzea and is strongly in favor of opening Sharlayan's borders."My sweet child, always remember that having knowledge is pointless if you are not able to use it to make lives better."

And so it was that when Leilana graduated from the Studium at 19, she turned down the opportunity to advance to become an Archon and instead chose to become a traveling scholar. She would both pursue and disseminate knowledge. Using her mother's travel diary as a basis for her own journey, Leilana aimed to travel the world to learn more and to help others using her knowledge.Her journey would start in Eorzea, landing in the port city of Limsa Lominsa. From there, she would explore Vylbrand before moving to the main continent. She would then visit Gridania, Coerthas, and Ul'dah in turn, before returning to Limsa Lominsa to travel to Thavnair. After spending time in Thavnair, she would continue her eastward journey to Kugane. After securing passage to Yanxia through the Ruby Sea, she would spend a considerable amount of time with the people of the Steppe and come to witness the plight of those living under Garlean rule in Doma. Following her time in the Far East, she would return to Eorzea through her prior route, taking a ship from Kugane to Thavnair and onward to Limsa Lominsa.The journey would take her the better part of 4 years. During her travels, she has gained a greater appreciation and understanding of the world around her. As she steps foot into Limsa Lominsa once again, she ponders her answer to the question her parents asked her when she first set out."Leilana, as you travel the world and witness its wonders, I want you to think about this. Should knowledge be contained, limited to those few with the capability to reach and understand it? Or should it be set free, letting all to take in its wonders...and the horrors that can come with it?"
